Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q. My computer has an Intel 82800 family video adapter and whenever I try to run     Majestic Chess, I am told that the program cannot be run. What is the problem?
A. This problem is occurring because this graphics controller cannot support the     default resolution and bit-depth for Majestic Chess, which is 1024×768 with 32-bit     color. But there is a workaround for this problem. In your Majestic Chess runtime     folder, there is a subfolder called “res”. In this folder there is a file called “User.ini”.     Open this file for editing with any simple text editor, such as Notepad. There will be     a section that says “[3Dsettings]” and a line in that section that says     “32bit_color=1”. Change this line to read “32bit_color=0” and save the file. You will     now be able to run Majestic Chess.

Q. My computer has an S3 Savage video adapter and all text in Majestic Chess is     unreadable. What’s going on?
A. The problem is due to the fact that the drivers for this adapter are not 100%     compatible with DirectX 8.1 or higher.

Q. Where can I get updates for Majestic Chess?
A. The easiest way to get program updates is to go to the Multi Player mode.
Majestic Chess will automatically check for program updates every time it connects     to the Majestic Chess server. After downloading the update, you will be prompted to     install the update. After the update completes, Majestic Chess will be launched     again, and you will be able to run the program normally.
Q. I have tried several times to register my copy of Majestic Chess with the registration     code on the front of my CD case. Each time, the program says that my code was     accepted and I can then play the game. But, the next time I try to play the game, it     asks me for the code again! What am I doing wrong?
A. You aren’t doing anything wrong. We have no idea why this rare problem is     happening but it has to do with a certain portion of your Windows Registry not being     writeable. Additionally, this problem only has been reported by Windows XP users.     So, at this time, the fix that we have for it will only work on Windows XP. Go to     “Start Menu -> Run”, type “regedit” and press “OK”. Then, navigate to this key:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Fluent_Entertainment\Majestic_Chess

Then, go to the “Edit -> Permssions” menuitem and make sure that the “Full     Control” box is checked. Then quit regedit and you should be able to successfully     enter your Majestic Chess registration key.

Q. Once or twice I have had to upgrade your demo when I logged onto the multiplayer     feature. Why is that?
A. As we improve the functionality of the multiplayer portion of Majestic Chess, we     would like our demo users to also benefit from these improvements, such as     increased chat features and better performance. Additionally, communication     protocol changes will also cause our demo users to upgrade at the same time as     the owners of the full retail version of Majestic Chess.

Q. I installed your demo version off of a CD (rather than downloading it from your     website), and then I had to download a 40MB update file when I tried to go to the     multiplayer section. After downloading this update file, any time I try to play a game     online, the program crashes. What’s up?
A. There is a rare problem with how this update is modifying one of the Majestic Chess     files. The file is called USER.INI, and it can be found in the “res” folder, under the     Majestic Chess runtime folder. If you experience this problem, simply delete this file     AFTER downloading and installing the update, and you will be able to play online.
Another way to solve this problem, if you have a fast enough internet connection, is     to completely uninstall the demo that you installed from the CD, and then download     the latest version of the demo from our website.

Q. When attempting to install Majestic Chess, I get an error message that says that     “Unable to Launch Majestic Chess Installer”. How can I install the program?
A. The cause of the problem is still under investigation, but it has to do with the way
the autorun program is attempting to run the installation program. You should be     able to install Majestic Chess simply by running the installation program manually.     You can do this by running Windows Explorer, navigating to the CD drive that     contains the Majestic Chess CD, then navigating to the “MajesticChess” subfolder     of the CD. If you then double-click the file called “Setup.EXE”, the installation should     proceed normally.

Q. My frame rate for Majestic Chess is very slow. What can I do to speed it up?
A. There are a few ways that you can speed up the graphic performance of Majestic     Chess. The best way is to go to the Single Player mode, and then go to “Options     -> Settings”. In this Settings dialog there will be an option that says “32-bit color”.     Uncheck this option and exit Majestic Chess. When you restart the program,     performance should have improved (possibly greatly).
Another way to improve performance is to use a 2D board whenever possible. This     requires the video card to do the least amount of work.
One other way is to close as many extra windows as possible when playing, as     many of these windows refresh their contents regularly. Some good candidates are     the “Online” and “Players” windows in the Multi Player mode, for example.
